From theory to practice: When transmission goes beyond the transaction

Tuesday 03 Jun 2025

At BestValue, transmission is about more than just selling or acquiring a business. It’s part of a broader approach built on guidance, knowledge sharing, and preparing the next generation. That’s exactly why we welcomed Olivier Closkin for a 14-week internship, fully immersed at BestValue. A final-year student at HEC Liège, Olivier approached his internship with curiosity, discipline, and enthusiasm. His goal: to dive deep into the work of an M&A advisor and business transfer specialist. A hands-on experience, rich in learning and discovery!

Why did you choose to intern at BestValue?

For two main reasons. First, the job itself: I was drawn to the M&A sector because it combines multiple dimensions: financial analysis, of course, but also strategy, communication, research… and most importantly, a strong human component. You’re supporting people through major, often emotional, decisions. Second, the company: I was attracted to BestValue because of its human scale, the dynamic atmosphere, the team’s professionalism, and the great feedback I’d heard. From the very first interactions, I felt a good connection and realised their values aligned with what I was looking for.

How would you describe the team spirit and working environment at BestValue?

I loved the work atmosphere. The team spirit is omnipresent. We have lunch together every day, we take part in sports activities outside the office, and there’s a real sense of closeness among the team members. This friendly vibe goes hand in hand with everyone’s professionalism, which creates a great environment to push yourself. Of course, there’s a time to work and a time to relax, but that balance is exactly what makes the workplace so motivating.

What did you learn about M&A or business transmission that you didn’t know before?

Honestly, almost everything was new to me. Sure, the Corporate Finance course at HEC touches on valuation methods, but working in a business transfer firm involves much more than that. I was drawn to the sector because I knew it wasn’t just about pure finance. There’s a human and strategic dimension to every M&A project. But aside from that instinct, I was starting from scratch. This internship helped me understand the full scope of the support BestValue offers in M&A operations. In three months, I learned a lot, even though I’m well aware there’s still plenty more to discover.

What skills did you develop or strengthen during your internship?

This internship allowed me to grow on several levels. On the technical side, I strengthened my skills in financial analysis and company valuation while learning how to structure clear and impactful deliverables. I also learned how important it is to understand a client’s expectations to identify the most relevant targets, sometimes based on highly specific sector-related criteria. Beyond technical skills, I discovered how much business transmission also relies on human qualities: rigour, organisational skills, clear communication, team spirit, and the ability to manage priorities, because no two days or projects are the same. All of these values are essential in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.

Was there a moment when you stepped out of your comfort zone?

Yes, several times. For example, during meetings where I had to present a valuation or a deliverable. I was challenged with precise, sometimes very technical questions to test the depth of my reasoning. I was never answered right away, the team encouraged me to figure it out on my own. At the moment, it could be destabilising, but it was also incredibly educational. Another real challenge was my participation in the Transeo Deal Club seminar, where I presented an offer in English to a group of around fifty M&A professionals. That pushed me out of my comfort zone—but it helped me build confidence, improve my public speaking skills, and realise that I could handle this kind of situation successfully. It’s often by stepping out of your comfort zone that you learn the most!

Olivier was looking for a concrete experience in finance, and he wanted to test his interest in M&A. He chose BestValue for its human scale, its professionalism, and its dynamic work environment.
